Eurydice was a nymph and wife of Orpheus, known mainly from the touching myth of the couple. When she was bitten by a snake and died on her wedding day, Orpheus, inconsolable, descended to Hades to bring her back. With his music he bewitched Hades and Persephone, who allowed him to take her back on the condition that he not look at her before they reached the upper world. Orpheus, however, turned his gaze just before they were about to exit, and as a result he lost her forever. Eurydice symbolizes lost love, the perishability of life and the inability of man to fully conquer death. Her story reminds us of the delicate balance between hope and loss, faith and temptation, leaving a lasting imprint on world culture.
