Cadmus was a Phoenician prince who travelled across the Mediterranean in search of his kidnapped sister, Europa. After an oracle, he abandoned the quest and founded the city of Thebes in Boeotia. There, he slayed a sacred dragon and with the advice of Athena, he sowed the dragon's teeth from which sprang the Spartans, armed men who fought among themselves. Cadmus married Harmony, daughter of Ares and Aphrodite, and together they had many descendants, who played an important role in Greek mythology. Cadmus is considered the founder of Thebes and the forefather of many heroes.
