Theseus was one of the greatest heroes of ancient Athens. Son of King Aegeus, Theseus was raised in Troizina and became known for his exploits. The most famous of these was the slaying of the Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull, who dwelt in the intricate labyrinth of Crete. With the help of Ariadne, who gave him a magic tangle to find his way out, Theseus killed the monster and saved Athens from the blood tax that had been imposed on it. Theseus, however, did not stop there. During his wanderings, he faced many dangers and defeated many enemies, making him one of the most admired heroes of Greek mythology.
