Thetis was one of the Nereids, sea nymphs of Greek mythology. As the daughter of Nereus, she was considered extremely beautiful. Zeus, the king of the gods, desired her, but a prophecy revealed that she would give birth to a son stronger than his father. Fearing for his power, Zeus married her to Peleus, a mortal hero. From their union was born Achilles, the greatest hero of the Trojan War. Thetis, trying to make her son immortal, set him on fire to burn his mortal flesh. But Peleus interrupted her, saving Achilles' life, but leaving him vulnerable at the heel, where he was being held. Thetis, despite her best efforts, was unable to prevent her son's fatal end in the Trojan War.
