Eteocles was the son of Oedipus and Jocasta, brother of Polynices. After the death of their father, the two brothers agreed to share the throne of Thebes alternately. However, when it was Polynices' turn to reign, Eteocles refused to hand over power to him. This led to a war between the two brothers, known as the "Seven on Thebes". In the final battle, both brothers were killed by each other, thus confirming the tragic fate of the Labdacid family.
